Enemy and neighbour

The German occupation of 1940-45 put an extreme toll on life in Hanstholm.

In a few years, the peaceful fishing village was turned into the strongest fortress in Denmark, and eventually its inhabitants were forced from their homes.

The new exhibition “Enemy and neighbour" focuses on the human role in both Danish and German side and provides a unique opportunity to get close to war everyday life in a small town on the west coast of Denmark.

The exhibition tells thus of both the lives of the German soldiers lives in the fortress and of civilian life in the shadow of the fortifications - and how occupier and occupied lived together. Everything is brought to life with words, voice, images and film clips.

The exhibition is concluded with “The Horizon", which is a multimedia installation, which unfolds a timeline with events -  local as well as in the world - affecting the bunker. An interactive layer is activated when the visitor moves closer to the projection, and portraits of people involved with the bunker appear.
