The Olsen Gang in Thy
In 2021, it was 50 years since the classic movie "Olsen Gang in Jutland" was filmed.
The central parts of the movie were filmed in Thy, and the large German bunkers in Hanstholm played a central role. They contained the forgotten treasure from the war, which the gang had traveled all the way to Jutland to find.
Because the museum area's bunkers were such important backdrops in the film, Bunkermuseum Hanstholm is marking the film's 50th anniversary by opening a special exhibition and publishing a book about the film on June 26 - both titled "Olsen Gang in Thy".
The exhibition and book tell about the film, the filming process in 1971 and the locations in Thy that appear in the film.
Both the exhibition and book have been created in collaboration with Olsenbandenfanclub Deutschland and Nordisk Film.
The book can be purchased on Museum Thy's webshop and in the museum shop.

The Olsen Gang at Bunker Museum Hanstholm
After a huge success in the movie world, people often talk about the difficult two. This was never the case for the Olsen Gang films, where Nordisk Film, with Erik Balling at the helm, produced a total of 14 films with the well-known petty criminals from Valby who wanted to pull off the big heist.
The 14 Olsen Gang films are perhaps the greatest success in Danish film history. You could almost go so far as to say that the Olsen Gang is a piece of Danish cultural history.
The third Olsen Gang movie "Olsen Gang in Jutland" is mainly set in Thy and the area around Bunkermuseum Hanstholm. A significant part of the other scenes in the movie are shot in the area around Vigsø and Hamburg (in Thy), for example some of the roads.

The plot of Olsen Gang in Jutland
When Egon emerges from Vridsløselille State Prison in this third Olsen Gang movie, he has a plan that cannot fail. From a fellow inmate, Egon has bought a crumpled map of one of the Germans' abandoned command bunkers on the West Coast. A German general hid a treasure in gold bars and dollars here for his future in South America, but he was surprised by the peace, and the treasure is believed to still be there.
The other two members of the Olsen Gang, Benny and Kjeld, are anxious to say the least at the thought of going all the way to Jutland, and the venture (plan) almost comes to grief when Kjeld's domineering wife Yvonne hears that they are going to U D L A N D E T! To keep the peace, they have to take her and their son Børge along, which means a lot of furniture has to be loaded, so Benny has to get a crappy old truck that can hold a bit more. So Benny's 1961 Chevrolet Impala is "swapped" for a butcher's cart. They set off full of optimism, convinced that Jutland and the rednecks must be child's play for people with their talents. There are a few surprises in store for them.
Firstly, Jutland is bigger than they thought. Yvonne exclaims at one point: "No, we have to get there soon!" and a little later "Well, that can't be true. People can't live here at all." When they finally find the right bunker, it is filled with water and can only be climbed in full diving gear. The case is further complicated when two international con artists, Karina and Rico, enter the picture. She is the daughter of a deceased Jutland entrepreneur and, after a life in the Riviera, returns to her hometown to find the treasure her father once told her about.
And then there are the Jutlanders. It turns out that they are not as easy to mess with as Egon thought. Local ironmonger Mads "Femøre" Madsen and his mute sidekick Betterøv get a finger in the pie, and the Olsen Gang must unfold all their inventive ingenuity and incredible daring before they find the treasure after many hardships.
And they even have a few surprises in store.

The Olsen Gang bunker

Here Egon is in the ammunition corridor in the westernmost of the large bunkers (gun bunker 4). This is what it looks like today. You can easily explore this bunker.

The picture shows the southern entrance to the westernmost bunker for the 38 cm cannon in the museum area. This is where the Olsen Gang drove in with the train.

This picture was taken at the spot where the Olsen Gang leaves with the locomotive chased by Rico. This is an ammunition bunker located in the eastern part of the 38cm battery. It is located about 800m east of the bunker that the train ran into.

Olsen Gang merchandise
The movie poster depicts the Olsen Gang as a cartoon, alluding to the caricatured and funny nature of the Olsen Gang. The poster emphasizes the characters' features in terms of appearance as well as personality. Poster + DVD + various souvenirs can be purchased in the museum shop.
The Olsen Gang was at least as popular in the GDR as it was in Denmark, as it was one of the few films from the West that passed the censors. The censors liked the Olsen Gang's eternal battle against the capitalists, while moviegoers loved the three inventive Danes who repeatedly took on the authorities.
"Mächtig Gewaltig", as Benny's famous line "damn good" is translated into German.
